Jobs/Roles in the ECE Community: National/Federal Level



As I look at building my future I think about where I have been in my past as an Early Childhood Professional. I always go back the foundations of the Head Start Program. My Masters Degree in Early Childhood Studies - Administration, Management and Leadership will help me in my quest for my dream position. I really like the management part of Early Childhood. I like teaching my teachers and families and I have a passion for children who need help.  The following are positions that excite me.

Executive Director of a Head Start Program: The position I found was in Texas. The salary range is $41,000 - $79,040 a year. Summary of the job duties: Gives direction and leadership toward the achievement of Central Texas Opportunities, Inc.’s philosophy, mission and its goals and objectives. Implements the policies and programs adopted by the Board of Directors and manage the day to day affairs of the agency. The Director must ensure compliance with all contracts, regulations, and laws.  Experience/Education: Director must have a BA/BS in business administration social services, or a related degree with experience in non - profit management and federal grant administration. Experience and education may be substituted for one another. Applicant must have strong leadership and management skills. They need a working knowledge of local community needs and resources. Diplomacy and human relations skills are required (Head Start, 2014)

Zero to Three is a “national, nonprofit organization that provides parents, professionals and policymakers the knowledge and know-how to nurture early development” (Zero to Three, 2014).  Their mission is to ensure all babies and toddlers have a strong start in their life. The position available through Zero to Three is a Senior Training Specialist for the Early Head Start National Resource Center (EHS NRC): The Senior Training Specialist is responsible for contributing to the efforts of the EHS NRC to develop a comprehensive body of Early Head Start by organizing and enhancing the quality of its training efforts. This position will provide a limited number of research based training through face to face venues as well as distance venues such as audio conferences, webinars and/or webcasts. Salary is depending upon experience.  Education required is a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Development (Zero to Three, 2014). 
 
There are many times I look at natural disasters and wish that I was able to go and give aide for a short period of time. With the devastation seen in Haiti I wished I had the opportunity to go there if even for a short time and help. 

UNICEF – Is a program that has been working in 190 countries and territories to promote children’s survival, protection and development. The world’s largest provider of vaccines for developing countries, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS. (UNICEF, 2014). 
 
They employ committed professionals to work in five focus areas: Child Survival and Development, Basic Education and Gender Equality, HIV/AIDS, Child Protection and Policy Advocacy and Partnerships(UNICEF, 2014).  The length of time worked could be 2 years to 5 years in a duty station. There are volunteer and internship positions available. They have a rigid placement process to assure the individual is placed in the right setting.

    I agree that Head Start is an appealing option. Based upon your experience educational status, I believe that you may be qualified for that position. Maybe you should look into it.
